NOTE: A patch has been released since the writing of this review.
I downloaded Haunted not knowing anything about it. I decided to skip the readme and get straight into game play. The Haunted is insanely hard. I kept getting my ass kicked in single player. So I turned on god mode to try out the different weapons and look around the two maps.
You start with a knife, pistol, shotgun, and SMG, not to mention TNT. As you kill enemies, they will drop ammo, and weapon upgrades. Those weapon upgrades will replace the weapon you are holding with the next in the 4 levels for each of the weapons. Hordes of monsters will spawn, and proceed to eviscerate you.
There are so many things about this mod I want to nitpick or complain about, however it all would come down to personal preference. While playing, I have no game crashing bugs, or any bugs period. The monsters are good looking and ugly, and scared me more than a few times. Weapons are quite fun, maps are nice. There was nothing major I didn’t like.
Now to my issues: I don’t know the story, or why monsters are coming out of the ground and attacking me, but its gets rather annoying when they pop up 3 feet behind me. All the weapons are cool, however in the path of upgrades, some of the upgrades feel almost like downgrades. I go from a full auto pistol, to a 6 shot. I went from this awesome instant kill spinning melee claw-o-death to some sort of Xena Warrior Princess throwing thingy that misses all too often. Most notable was the shotgun. I upgrade to a bad-ass sawed off double barrel, which kills most everything in a single shot, to a Street Sweeper that seems to need an entire drum of shells to kill anything.
Oh, and to the DEV team, some players like myself find the stock single player VERY hard. Ammo seems almost unavailable. I ask, please-please-please, consider making an arcade mode for casual play. Even so, these issues are minor.
